I have been buying and selling watches on internet anyway a long time. Over the years I have purchased great watches for low prices and junk for too much. So, several years ago I started using certain rules to determine if I wish to bid. These rules work and if you follow them you can build a great collection without getting taken.
I mostly deal in pocket watches, I buy watches needing repair, fix and sell. Lately, the price of gold has risen to levels that make pocket watches with karat gold cases an interesting investment. So, here are some of my rules for buying karat gold watches.
1. I use the symbols on the watch case to determine if the watch is karat gold. The most helpful reference that I know is "The Complete Price Guide to Watches". This book is a must have for the collector. The latest edition shows symbols for solid gold and gold fill on pages 35 to 39.
2. I prefer the case to have a stamp saying "Warranted 14K (18K) US ASSAY" all other marks need to be checked.
3. Any case marked "Guaranteed 20 years (5, 10,25)" is gold fill.
4. Any case marked "Permanent" is gold fill.
5. Any case marked with scales is gold fill.
6. Any case marked with names such as Montauk, Empress, etc. is gold fill.
Finally karat gold cases look like karat gold cases and when you strike them they make a tinging sound. Solid gold cases are generally somewhat pliable. Gold fill cases are rigid.

Introduction to the WatchLiquidators Watch Setting Instructions
There is an almost endless supply of different watches and brands of watches in the world today, with hundreds more arriving in the market place weekly.
The one thing all these tens of thousands of brands and styles have in common is the watch movement. The watch movement is the part of the watch that keeps providing the time and performs the other functions unique to the style of each different watch type.
The movements can be broken down into just a few different types of movement and then broken down into a few more subcategories. The exact placement of these functions can be different on the watch dial (face of the watch) itself. In addition, the buttons used to operate and set the time and functions may be in different places on the watchcase.
The watchcase is the part of the watch that holds the watch dial and the movement. This is also, where the band fastens. I removed the bands in the pictures and concentrated on the dials alone.
I have attempted to give pictures and category names for many of the most common different types of movements and the directions to setting them. The best somewhat generic instructions are in the Fossil category.I hope this helps you with your watch, mans most commonly used invention.

How much should a servicing of repairing a watch cost?
The amount of work that a watchmaker does for a "cleaning" can vary widely, as can the price. Higher prices don't always mean a better job, but considering the amount of skilled labor involved, I can't see how anyone charging less than $30-$40 can be doing a reasonable job and still make enough to live on. Reasonable prices seem to be in the $50-$150 range for cleaning a simple pocket or wrist watch, although I have heard of quotes ranging from $20 to $500.
For $25 or so, some watchmakers will run the entire movement through an automatic cleaning machine, and maybe throw some oil in key spots. This will often make a watch that was too dirty or is gummed up with old oil to at least "run". This lets dealers sell the watch at a much higher price because it is "running and recently serviced" rather than "not running".
For a "real" servicing, the watch needs to be completely taken a part. All parts need to be inspected for damage and wear. Any broken, worn or missing parts need to be fixed. The parts need to be cleaned, usually with an automatic cleaning machine, and then inspected to make sure the parts really got clean. The watch must be reassembled, and checked to make sure it is running well in all positions. If the watch isn't running well in all positions, the problems must be diagnosed, fixed, and possibly the watch will need to be re-cleaned and re-oiled. Finally, most watchmakers let the watch run for at least 24-48 hours to make sure everything is working right.
Some watchmakers also use "automatic cleaning and oiling solutions" which deposits an oily goo all over the watch and eats away the finish. A "real" cleaning requires hand oiling, in the right amounts and in the right spots. Too much oil can be worse than not enough.
There are some watchmakers who will charge more to people who contact them directly than they do when they work for a jeweler. This is especially common if they think you have only one watch that is a family heirloom and this is their only chance to get money from you. These watchmakers may well be willing to negotiate on their price. Others watchmakers charge everyone the same price and won't be flexible at all. They may even be slightly put off if you ask.
Complicated watches such as chronographs, repeaters, fusee, and such will cost more, as will brands that have hard to find or expensive parts such has the high end Swiss watches. Watches from Switzerland, England or other non-American watches made before around 1910 can be very hard to find parts for, often the parts have to be custom made by hand.
Remember, the price quoted as $50-$150 is for just a cleaning, you should expect that any other work your watch requires will cost more accordingly. Old watches were put away in a drawer for a reason, often because they were broken or unreliable.
Most watchmakers won't try to make a watch run more accurately than when they were originally manufactured, so when I say "check the timing in each position", on an unadjusted 7 jewel movement, they probably will just make sure that it is keeping time within 10-60 seconds/day. A high grade railroad watch, on the other hand, will probably be made to run to within 10 seconds/day in every position, with the goal of having some positions cancel the errors of the others. Railroad watches were designed to keep time, while in rough use, to 30 seconds/week and most can be made that accurate even today.
The point here is that a quote of "$25" to repair a watch probably isn't a bargain, but $150 (or more) may be very reasonable for a given watch. On the other hand, the $150 quote might be no better than $25.

Caring for your watch strap
These tips will keep your watch strap looking new for longer:
Don’t wear perfume or moisturizers around your wrist, as the chemicals will erode the metal, leather and plastic of watchstraps.
Avoid leaving the watch in direct sunlight, as this fades leather and plastic straps.Metal bracelets should be washed carefully in water. If your bracelet is really dirty, use a soft toothbrush with soap and water. Finally, rinse with water and dry carefully with a soft cloth. Leather straps should be slightly loosened in the summer, when they may absorb perspiration. A tight strap not only prevents the passage of air over the strap undersurface but can also cause a perspiration rash on the wrist.
If the strap ever becomes wet with perspiration, wipe it dry with a soft cloth.When you take off your watch, leave it in a well-ventilated spot. Never put it in a sealed container if it is damp with perspiration.
Special care for watches:
Shocks: Your watch is a precision instrument. Treat it carefully, and it will serve you well. Avoid undue shocks (such as dropping on hard surfaces). Normal shocks caused by sports like tennis or golf are no problem, although "Twin Seiko" (extra-high precision) watches should not be worn while participating in such sports.
Perspiration: Protect your watch from heavy perspiration. Remember to wipe it dry as soon as conveniently possible.
Extreme temperatures: Quartz watches are much less affected by temperature than mechanical watches, and are designed to keep good time if worn on the wrist for eight hours a day in temperatures between -10°C and +35°C. If removed completely from the wrist, your watch may lose time during the winter, but will return to normal accuracy as soon as you start wearing it again.
If your watch is stored at temperatures outside the normal range (as low as -10°C or as high as +60°C) the electronic components may not function normally.
At temperatures below freezing, the liquid crystals in digital watch displays respond slowly. They also tend to look very dark at high temperatures. Normal performance returns at normal temperatures.
Your battery may run out much more quickly at high temperatures (above 40°C), and battery fluid may even leak out.
Chemicals: Chemical substances, gases, and so on, can discoluor cases, bracelets and straps. Mercury (from a broken thermometer, for instance) can cause particularly unsightly grey discoloration of gold plating.

How often should I get my watch serviced?
If you are going to use the vintage watch on a daily basis, you should get your watch serviced when you first get it and every couple of years there after. Water resistant watches can usually go 3-5 years, but if want to count on it being water resistant, you should have the seals checked every year. You shouldn't wait for your watch to stop working before servicing it any more than you would wait for your car to stop working before changing its oil.
If you aren't going to use the vintage watch, you should have it inspected to make sure that what you got was what you thought you were going to get. There are pros and cons involved with having a watch in your collection cleaned. Every time a watch is worked on, there is a certain risk that something will be broken or lost. Many cleanings will also dull the finish on the parts, and this is especially true for damaskeened and two-tone finishes. Cleaning will often also clean off some of the paint in the lettering on the movement. And, of course, there is the added expense of having a watch cleaned.
On the other hand, a cleaned and oiled watch is less likely to rust or have corrosion from gunk on the metal. They aren't making any new replacement parts for antique watches, so If your watch needs parts now, you are more likely to get it fixed now than in the future.
You should also immediately get your watch cleaned if the insides (movement) ever gets wet, or even if you just see moisture forming on the inside of the crystal. Don't trust the "water proofing" on vintage wrist watches, treat them like pocket watches and non-water resistant wrist watches. Water resistant watches can actually be worse because the gaskets and seals wear out and end up trapping water inside instead of keeping it out.
Most vintage watches can be fixed, but rust is the #1 killer of watches.

The gears are designed so that the teeth roll on each other, instead of sliding. Once the right shape is worn away, they will never be as good. In general, the older the watch, the poorer the job the case will do in keeping the dust out. Water resistant watches, even when the seals no longer keep out water, tend to do a good job of keeping out dust.

How to fix your dead watch - take it apart
Anybody actually following my SPOT adventures (all of the 3 people) may have noticed that I have been neglecting my journal here for a while. Never fear, I am still a big SPOT fan, and even have lots to share from the last few weeks.
About three weeks ago, my original Abacus watch died. I didn't even notice a large static shock - I was just taking off a shirt. Oh well, I thought I would just have to reboot it, as usual. I was wrong. I spent days pushing and holding all sorts of button combinations. I held the buttons until my fingers had little imprints of them. I left the watch on the charger overnight. I pushed the buttons while on the charger. No luck.
It looked like this time I would finally have to give in, and send it to Fossil for repair. Mind you, I had posted that I would do that about two weeks before the incident, but despite the annoying resets, I just couldn't bring myself to part with my only watch - I was too hooked on it.
After about 5 days without the watch, I was ready to box it all up and take it to the post office, when I realized something. While pt had posted pictures of the guts of a Suunto N3, I hadn't seen the inside of a Fossil watch yet. So I decided to take it apart just for fun. I put together a handy picture reference to the inner workings of an Abacus watch.
A couple of interesting things. First of all, a little plastic section that clearly says "Citizen" proves that Fossil's watches are, in fact, manufactured by Citizen. And while there isn't much else to see inside, the battery type and OEM information are informative. The battery also has a nice little plug connector, similar to many motherboard connections.
And that's when an idea struck me: why not disconnect the battery and thus perform a really "hard" reset. So I unplugged it, plugged it back in - and the watch came back on! Apparently it needed a full reset, which is what yanking the battery did. I put it back together, and it has been working fine. I had another static incident when it died and wouldn't turn back on, and yanking the battery again solved the problem.
Of course, I am sure this voids your already short Fossil warranty, and you could permanently damage your watch, so don't try it just for fun. But if you have a completely dead watch, and don't feel like sending it in, it's something to try. After the 5 days of being SPOTless, I was really happy to see the watch face come back on. After another 10 minutes the watch locked onto a signal and started downloading content. So far it's been faring rather well, too.

To protect the integrity of their good name, several organizations have formed with the specific intention of regulating quality and defining standards for the industry. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry has produced a list of "Verordnung Swiss Made" rules that state that a Swiss watch must:
· Have a Swiss movement that
· Was set into its case in Switzerland
· By a manufacturer of Swiss origin.
Which leads to the question: What is a Swiss movement? They have a ready answer, of course:

The theory is that at least 50% percent of the manufacturing costs will have been incurred "locally," protecting the trade and ensuring quality assembly.

Who is the COSC and what do they do?

What's a "chronograph"?
By definition a chronograph "records time." In modern watches this refers to a stopwatch function of some sort.
What do the letters "T" and "O" mean on my watch?
The letter "T" on the face of a watch stands for tritium, the greenish-white substance on the hands and numbers that glows in the dark. The letter "O" means that the indices on the dial are made of gold.

Ironically, humans can only safely dive to about half that depth, and extremely high depth ratings are more an indicator of craftsmanship and status than actual utility. Water resistance is also measured in ATM, or atmospheres. One atmosphere is equivalent to 10 meters.
What does "Shock Resistant" mean?
Shock resistance is an American government standard of durability which means that the watch can survive a drop of three feet onto a wooden floor.
Is it true that only a diamond will scratch a sapphire crystal face?
Not quite. Another sapphire or ruby will scratch it. Also remember that scratch-proof is not hatter-proof. A sapphire crystal is remarkably durable, but far from impervious. It's best to treat a quality watch like any other piece of finely-crafted jewelry.

The Rolex watch is a status symbol, It’s the Rolls Royce of all Watches. If you have a Rolex, you probably have money, It tells others that you have it. This is why it’s the most copied watch in the world today. There is no better looking watch than a Rolex. The Submariner is trendy and sharp, while the Oyster is classic. One of the most copied is the Rolex Mens datejust. Probably one of the best looking watches ever made. many will argue and claim the Daytona as the best looking mens watch, I guess its personal choice.
If you buy direct from a dealer or watch store you will pay full price and get a genuine watch. However it IS possible to get a genuine Rolex watch from newspaper advertisements or better still here on E-Bay. The best deals on a Rolex watch can be found on e-bay. The GMT and Submariers can be found at 50% of retail.
Lots of the counterfeits now use mechanical movements that lets the sweep second hand glide around the dial chapters, Something common to all Genuine Rolex. Others use a quartz movement where the sweep second hand ticks every second as it steps around the dial, an obvious fake. However Rolex did make a few models that used quartz movements. Lucquin champion in Switzerland
Jean-François Lucquin described it as "a dream" after he won the Omega European Masters at Crans-sur-Sierre in thrilling fashion following a play-off with Rory McIlroy.
