Geneva Seal

Geneva seal is like the C.O.S.C., it shows a watch meeting some requirements and increases the value and price of a watch.

However, C.O.S.C. emphasizes on the accuracy of time keeping while Geneva seal emphasizes on the craftsmanship of a watch.

GENEVA SEAL Criteria:

1 (A)The workmanship of all the caliber's components, including those of additional mechanisms, must meet the requirements of the office for optional inspection of Geneva watches.

1 (B)Steel parts must have polished angles and their visible surfaces smoothed down. Screw heads have to be polished, with their slots and rims chamfered.

2All movements must be provided on the train and escapement with ruby jewels having polished holes. On the bridge side, the jewels must be half frosted with polished sinks. The end stone for the center wheel on the base plate is not required.

3The balance spring should be pinned up in a grooved plate with a stud having a rounded collar and cap. Mobile studs are allowed.

4Split or fitted indexes are allowed with a holding system except in extra-thin calibers where the holding system is not required.

5Regulating systems (balances) with variable radius of gyration are allowed provided they comply with criteria 1 (A) and 1 (B).

6The wheels of the going train have to be chamfered above an below and have a polished sink. In wheels 0.15mm thick or less, a single chamfer is allowed on the bridge side.

7In wheel assemblies, the pivot shanks and the faces of the pinion leaves have to be polished.

8The escape wheel has to be light, not more than 0.16mm thick in large calibers and 0.13mm in calibers under 18mm, and its locking-faces have to be polished.

9The angle traversed by the lever is to be limited by fixed banking walls to the exclusion of pins or studs.

10Movements fitted with shock proofing are accepted.

11The ratchet wheel and the crown wheel should be finished according to registered patterns.

12Wire springs are not accepted.

Shock Resistance

G-force (gravitational force) is the force pulling an object toward the center of the earth. Normally, we are suffering a 1G when we are stationary. When a car is cornering or accelerating, the driver suffers more than 1G; a 10-pound human head will weigh 30 pounds under 3G acceleration.

1G = 9.8 m/sec2, 1Gs = 9.8 m/sec

A golf swing is about 5000 Gs; therefore, do not wear an mechanical watch when playing golf.

According to the ISO 1413 standard, the shock resistance test is conducted by using a pendulum impact testing machine. The mechanism sets off a circular movement which brings the pendulum to hit the watch. When the watch is hit by the pendulum, the watch will "fly" at the presetted acceleration, e.g. 5000 Gs.

1 shock is directed against the side of the case, parallel to the plane of the watch, on the 9 o'clock side.

2 shock is directed against the glass, perpendicular to the plane of the watch.

Review of the Citizen Attesa ATV53-2933

About three or four years ago, I got an email from a reader chastising us for not having better coverage of Citizen. I remember thinking at the time that I really wanted more Citizen content on Watch Report, but that they just weren't doing anything all that interesting. I promised the reader that we would keep a closer eye on Citizen's new watches, and do our best to make sure they were better represented.

Fast forward to the present, and Citizen is now one of my favorite brands. Since June of 2006, we've written 11 articles on Citizen watches, and I anticipate that the pace will increase. Every year, Citizen is stepping up their game and releasing more and more watches that are grabbing our attention. Although I'm still a diehard Japanese-market Casio G-Shock fan, I now regard Citizen watches with the exact same level of respect.

A great deal of my interest in Citizen watches comes from the Attesa line which I consider comparable to the MR-G line of Casio G-Shocks. Both lines represent some of the most advanced, durable, and certainly coolest quartz watches in the world.

The first Attesa to really grab my attention was the ATV53-2832, but it was the extremely unique look and functionality of the ATV53-2933 that finally inspired me to do a full review.

Let's start with a detailed rundown of an extremely impressive (and lengthy) set of features:

Light-weight titanium case and bracelet with a highly scratch resistant DLC (Diamond-like Carbon) coating. Not only does DLC shrug off all kinds of abuse, but it helps give the watch a very cool stealthy look appreciated by those of us who aren't so much into bling.
Sapphire crystal (virtually scratchproof) with AR coating.
Atomic calibration compatible with time signals in Japan, US, Germany, and China. Calibration occurs at 2 a.m., 3 a.m., and 4 a.m. The 4 a.m. calibration can be moved to any time of the day which is great for people who work nights. While calibrating, the second hand turns into a signal strength indicator.
Solar powered with a 3.5 year power reserve, two levels of power-saving (the first for the LCDs, and the second for the analog hands), battery power indicator, and a low-battery warning. If the watch's battery ever dies completely, it's even smart enough to automatically calibrate once sufficiently recharged.
World time. 43 cities are pre-programmed, and there's room to add one custom city (the time can be set in increments of 15 minutes which can accommodate pretty much any time zone on the planet). DST can be individually toggled for any of the 43 cities, and each city can be hidden if you'd like to remove it from the list (to make scrolling more efficient). And finally, you can swap your home and world time zones by depressing the two buttons on the right simultaneously. This is a great feature for people who frequently travel between the same two cities.
Two world time alarms. Each alarm can be set to individual cities, and each alarm sounds a distinct tone. The alarms have a test function so you can try them out without actually having to set them and wait for them to go off.
Countdown timer with a maximum time of 99 minutes.
Stopwatch with a resolution of 1/100th of a second and a maximum time of 23 hours, 59 minutes, and 59.99 seconds.
UTC subdial at the 12 o'clock position, 24-hour subdial at the 2 o'clock position, mode subdial at the 6 o'clock position, and battery power subdial at the 10 o'clock position.
Internal timing bezel for analog timing. This is an extremely unusual feature typically only found on dive watches. The crown located at the 8 o'clock position rotates the inner bezel which you can use for timing against the analog minute hand.
Red electroluminescent backlight (very cool effect), and surprisingly bright luminescent paint on the hour and minute hands, hour indices, and the "pearl" of the rotating diving bezel.
Tri-fold push-button clasp with slide micro-adjuster. Rather than moving spring pins to make micro adjustments to the bracelet, just depress the clasp buttons and slide the bracelet in or out to get a perfect fit.
Anti-magnetic to 4,800 A/m (not quite a Rolex Milgauss, but not bad), hand correction function (in case the hands get misaligned due to magnetism or shock), and shock-resistant construction.
Water resistant to 100 meters, or about 330 feet.
47mm by 13.4mm, 125g.

In general, three things about the Citizen Attesa ATV53-2933 really stand out:
Ease of use. Although the ATV53-2933 is an extremely sophisticated watch, the three-position crown flanked by big, accessible buttons make it surprising intuitive to use and efficient to navigate.
Intelligent design. The telescoping micro-adjustment is a feature all watches should have, and the skeletonized hands that don't completely obscure the LCDs below show that a great deal of thought went into the design of this watch.
Quality. Titanium is such a light metal that it can sometimes come across as cheap, but the ATV53-2933 manages to feel as well constructed as it actually is. The button feedback is good, the LCDs are very high contrast, the bracelet is quiet and solid, and the combination of sapphire crystal and DLC coating make the entire watch almost completely scratchproof.

As you might have guessed, I'm a big fan of the Citizen Attesa ATV53-2933, and of Citizen watches in general. Citizen's closest competitor is probably Casio, and while I'm a very big G-Shock fan, I think Citizen has continued to innovate and distinguish itself by producing some extremely impressive timepieces. Like many great Citizen watches (too many), the ATV53-2933 is not available in the US, but it can be imported by overseas retailers for something around $1,300.

Pagoda collection’s spectacular result

OMEGA and Sotheby’s Hong Kong joined hands for charity auction of the “Beijing 2008, Unique No. 8 Collection” The collection fetched HK$9,620,000 (1,231,071 USD) at the auction

OMEGA, in partnership with Sotheby’s, today held a charity auction of all 35 of the timepieces released to celebrate OMEGA’s role as Official Timekeeper of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The timepieces, collectively known as the OMEGA “Beijing 2008, Unique No. 8 Collection”, were auctioned off as part of Sotheby’s Important Watches Autumn Sale 2008 earlier today at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Collection was sold for HK$9,620,000 (1,231,071 USD)*;

This one-of-a-kind Collection was created to commemorate OMEGA’s role as Official Timekeeper of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The Collection features 35 OMEGA timepieces, including the eighth numbered timepiece from each of the 32 limited edition watches released in the Beijing Olympic Collection during the build-up to the Games and three “Olympic Split Seconds Chronograph 1932” pocket watches. Each watch bears the limited edition number of 8 and is covered by an exclusive 8-year warranty. The Collection was presented in a custom-made black lacquered walnut presentation cabinet reminiscent of traditional Chinese architecture, earning it its nickname of “The Pagoda”.

To aid youth affected by this year’s tragic earthquake in Sichuan, OMEGA is pleased to announce that the full proceeds from the sale (HK$8,000,000) will be donated to the Chinese Athletes Educational Foundation (CAEF) in support of its “All-weather Playground” project in Sichuan. The objective of the project is to help local students recover from the psychological trauma of the disaster through sports and team activities. OMEGA’s auction partner Sotheby’s is also demonstrating its support by donating part of its auction proceeds to the foundation.

OMEGA President Stephen Urquhart congratulated the new owner of the Collection on his successful bid and commented on the Unique No. 8 collection, saying, “There is no other Olympic collectable like this and there can only be one owner of such a singular collection, but OMEGA is extremely pleased that by offering it in this special auction, the benefits of these remarkable timepieces can be extended to so many youth in Sichuan.

CAEF’s gratitude was expressed by Li Ning, the charity’s founder, renowned Chinese Olympic gymnast and the man who lit the torch to open this year’s Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, who said, “The generosity of OMEGA and Sotheby’s has given all of us involved in the rebuilding effort in Sichuan great encouragement. The funds raised from this remarkable auction can help the development of our ‘All-weather Playground’ project and provide much needed joy to all of those affected.”

This meaningful and successful charitable auction marks another milestone in OMEGA’s legendary Olympic history.

How to choose a watch or Choosing a watch

Style and Design.
The first question you should be asking yourself is "What do I want my new watch for?" Is it for dress? For everyday, assuming that's not the same as dress? For specific sports, such as running or diving? The fewer watches you plan to buy, the harder it is to answer this question. If you are going to have only one, it better be a fairly plain sports model, because a heavy sports watch with a prominent bezel looks silly with a suit, and a gold watch with a black crocodile strap looks even dumber when worn with shorts and sandals. (Well, some of us look dumb in shorts and sandals no matter what the watch!)

But, if you're going to have several watches, the question becomes "What do I want this new watch for?" and that's much easier to deal with.
Here are some broad categories of watch styles.

Dress. The basic rule is that it is gold, plain, and thin, but there's some leeway. A rotating bezel, or any bezel with markings on it, is out. The dial and hands are less important, but avoid thick markings and hands with lots of tritium. It's hard to find a chronograph that works as a dress watch, although they do exist, so, unless you really need it to act as a stop watch, you should skip that feature. If the watch is gold, get it on a strap. The watch will look better and be much cheaper.

Designer. This category is hard to describe. They're designed by someone with a world-wide reputation, and the designer's name is publicized. Often watches in this group look fairly unusual, but not always--Venturas look pretty conventional.

Sports. These watches are usually large, often have bezels with prominent markings, are water-resistant to some degree, and nearly always have thick, luminous hands and markings. They're meant to look rugged, and most of them are. Two important sub-categories are Diver and Pilot. All modern Diver watches are inspired by the Rolex Submariner, and all Pilot watches by the IWC Mark XII (or earlier). (Diver is a style of watch, but not necessarily an appropriate use for one. You'll want to think twice before taking an expensive watch diving. It might get banged up and its water seal may fail. It might be more practical to use an inexpensive quartz watch or a diving computer. Taking a pilot watch up in the air is perfectly OK, however.)

Pick a luxury watch that matches your personality - One of the most common questions our clients ask is: What is the best replica you carry? With the large variety of replica luxury watch available, it can be overwhelming when trying to figure out which brand will best meet your watch-wearing needs. I always say, choose a watch that matches your personality and style, consider your work as well as your play enviroment. Do you need a dressy watch? Do you need a sporty watch? Do you want a flashy watch? or a very subtle classic watch? When are you planning to wear your watch? Remember that the watch must make you happy and your taste may be totally different from my taste. There are several factors to consider when pondering an investment in a fine luxury watch, that is why a replica is a great option for you to get familiar with certain style before you invest thousands of dollars in an authentic watch.

How to Organize Jewelry (Ladies)

Frustrated with those tangled necklaces? Missing an earring? Here is how to make every article of jewelry looking pretty right when you need it! And, there is no fuss for those tangled necklaces...
Steps
1. Gather all of your jewelry. Earrings, bracelets, anklets, necklaces and rings. Separate each of them into categorized piles:
o Necklaces all together, laid straight on top of each other, so as not to tangle them.
o Rings in a tidy pile, and so on.
2. You'll need a container, box or tray. For earrings, Claire's has many options of earring totes. Each of them is cute, and quite nifty because you simply stick the earring through the tiny hole and clip the two pieces together. Voila!
3. Start with the earrings. Hang them from the top of the container, or stick them through an earring tote.
4. Move on to the necklaces. Place the larger, thicker ones on the bottom of the container and the tiny, delicate ones on the top.
5. Bracelets can clip around anything. You should have a separate container, box or tray for them. Same as the necklaces, place the larger ones on the bottom and little ones on the top.
6. Rings will not tangle. So just lay them on a tray, or in their own cute, little container.
7. Anklets (if you own any) can be stored in with the bracelets.
Tips
· Make A One-Piece Jewelry Holder:
· Get a paper towel tube and glue it to a piece of cardboard or whatever you prefer, and paint it however you want. Toilet paper tubes can be cut in half and glued beside the paper towel tube for rings. Hang the earrings over the open tops, rings go in the small toilet paper compartments, necklaces lay around the large tube and bracelets/anklets go around the small tubes.
· Make sure to clean any jewelry often.
· Always put whatever piece of jewelry you use, back where it belongs or you will lose them and/or tangle them.
Things You'll Need
· Jewelry
· Toilet paper/paper towel tubes
· Containers, boxes, bags and trays. (if you make the One-Piece Jewelry Holder, these are optional)
· Time

Ferrari Perpetual Calender Engineered by Officine Panerai wins

Ferrari Perpetual Calender Engineered by Officine Panerai wins Best Special Edition accolade at Middle East Watch of the Year Awards 2007

The Ferrari Engineered by Officine Panerai Perpetual Calender, a special edition watch created in celebration of the 60th anniversary of Ferrari, won the Best Special Edition Award amidst tight competition at the Middle East Watch of the Year Awards 2007, organized by Alam Assaat Wal Moujawharat magazine.

Commenting on the win, Mr. Angelo Bonati, CEO for Officine Panerai said, "We are thrilled to receive such a prestigious award. In spite of the competition between the different categories of high end mechanical brands, it is an honor that the Ferrari Perpetual Calender Special Edition was declared a winner.” The Ferrari engineered by Officine Panerai Perpetual Calender is a unique and sophisticated limited edition watch that is programmed to indicate the correct date until 2100, a year which will not be a leap year although it is a multiple of 100. In addition and clearly visible on the back is the engraving of the logo created specially for Ferrari to celebrate this important anniversary.

The Perpetual Calender, in a pink gold case, an edition in a steel case is also planned to be delivered in June 2008 to the Middle East region, appears with the technical and aesthetic details which have quickly made the Ferrari engineered by Officine Panerai range of watches such a success; from the elements applied to the dial, including the Ferrari Prancing Horse, to the other important aesthetic details which enhance it. The references to Ferrari cars and their dashboards found in the details of the design of the case and the straps are once again apparent.

The indicator of the perpetual calender – days and months – appears at 3 and 6 o’clock and recalls the plan of a racing circuit.

Technically the movement indicates the date according to the Gregorian calender which was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, which is still used today in the majority of countries across the world.

Ferrari is celebrating its 60th Anniversary in grand style with an exclusive limited edition of 60 units of a Scaglietti 612 Gran Turismo car, while Panerai is honouring the 60 years with 60 examples of this original exclusive Perpetual Calender watch, highlighting the perpetuity and continuity of these exclusively Italian productions.

LVMH acquisisce Hublot

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, the world's leading luxury group, announces that it has signed an agreement to acquire the Hublot group, a top of the range watchmaker enjoying very strong growth.
LVMH will acquire Hublot from Mr Carlo Crocco, who founded the group in 1980, and a company controlled by Mr Jean-Claude Biver, who has managed Hublot since 2004.

Hublot is a brand that is highly complementary to LVMH's existing watch portfolio comprising TAG Heuer, the world leader in prestigious sport watches and chronographs, the Swiss Watch Manufacturer Zenith, Dior Montres, Louis Vuitton watches sold exclusively in Louis Vuitton stores, and the watch collections of jewellers Chaumet, Fred and De Beers.

STRONG GROWTH POTENTIAL

Hublot, which has its headquarters and workshops near Geneva, has started building a factory at Nyon to accommodate its expansion plans. Having grown at a rapid pace since 2004, the brand achieved net revenue of more than CHF150 million in 2007 with an excellent profitability. A very significant increase in revenue is expected in 2008.

Today, Hublot has a very selective and efficient distribution network which is limited to 300 stores worldwide.

Hublot has a well-balanced geographic footprint spanning Switzerland, Spain, France, Germany, the US, Latin America, Middle East, Russia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore... The brand has recently been launched in China and India and has strong growth potential in Asia, Japan, North America and in certain European markets.

EXCEPTIONAL WATCHES AND CHRONOGRAPHS

The renowned Big Bang collection includes models equipped with automatic movements whose prices range from €8,000 (steel and ceramic) to over €300,000, integrating precious metals and technical complexity.

A new Big Bang collection for women was launched at the last Basel watch fair with great success.

Finally, the traditional classic line has been recently redesigned using natural rubber, zircon, gold and ceramics.

Carlo Crocco, founder of Hublot, said : "I am happy that Hublot, an innovative brand since is creation, is joining the LVMH group, the world leader in luxury goods, whose creative passion is without any doubt a value that I have always shared."

Jean-Claude Biver, the architect of the success of the Big Bang collection and the recent strong growth of Hublot, commented: "I am delighted that Hublot will be able to benefit from LVMH's support and strategic leadership in the luxury goods industry and so maximise its growth potential in the years to come. How to Add Charms to a Charm Bracelet

Charms falling off your bracelet? This article can help.

Things You'll Need
· 2 jewelry pliers
· jump rings
· original charm
· chain\bracelet

Over Wind or Over Wound Watch Mainspring.

Where in the world did the phrase, "I over wound my watch" come from anyway? Do you think you can actually over wind your watch? Did someone tell you that you over wound your watch?

These are all good questions and to an extent, the term "over wind and over wound" are correct. Yes we know and have heard it at least a thousand times, that "you can't over wind" a watch. The people who say that have heard the term before, and don't know what they are talking about. They seem to parrot the phrase in order to impress someone with their knowledge of watches. Well, here we go, they may be right and they may be wrong as the term was used.

The term "over wind" originated back in the days of blue steel mainsprings and animal fat oils that were used to lubricate watches. So lets get one thing out of the way now. In technical terms, you can't actually over wind a watch. The mainspring will only go so far into its coil, if you could keep winding your watch, something would break. The stem might be the first thing to break, then for sure you would strip the teeth off the clutch. If the clutch and stem were to withstand the stress, then for sure the teeth in the crown wheel and ratchet wheel would strip. Now this would be over winding your watch. Now the details...

Blue steel mainsprings were rather weak in terms of their ability not to take on a "set." This is when the mainspring conforms itself to a little larger in size than the space it occupies within the mainspring barrel. When they take on a set, it is difficult for the fully wound mainspring to release itself from its own coils and powering the watch.

Watches were lubricated with animal fat oils. Over a period of about one year, these types of oils would tend to gel and become thick and tacky. Now, if you have both of these elements present in your watch, and you wind it up all the way, as far as it will go, the thick oil will bind the coils of the weak mainspring together and the coils will not slip and power the gear train. Here, you have now over wound your watch. Had you only wound it up say three forths of the way, the mainspring would still slip and provide some power to your watch. So you see, in this sense, you can and did over wind your watch.

Old jewelers many years ago, would tell people that they over wound their watchs and that was the reason they stopped. For the average customer, the lack of information was OK. Why go into great detail as to why the watch stopped. It just took time away from the bench. The jeweler would tell them the watch needed to be cleaned. This took care of the problem for about a year or so until it needed to be cleaned again.

It is interesting that now, after all of these years, we still hear people saying that they, "over wound" their watches. There are still many old watches out there that have not been serviced for decades. People will wind them up, and they will run for awhile, then one day, the dreadful "over winding" takes place.

White alloy mainsprings and synthetic watch oils. These were very important inventions in the field of horology. The white alloy springs for the most part would not break and maintained their original "S" shaped form. The new oils did not gel and become thick like the old animal fat oils. Watches could go for much longer periods of time without the need for yearly cleaning. With these modern advances, the old terminology of "over winding" started to slowly fade away, just like the old watchmakers who coined the phrase in the good old days. A period of horological history that has long since vanished.

We hope that you found this topic interesting and useful. If we can help you with your questions or solve your "over winding" questions.

Deception in the term Swiss Made in watches

The term "Swiss Made" is defined by the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry as:

A Swiss watch movement

As we have seen, to be Swiss, a watch must use a Swiss movement.
According to Section 2 OSM, a movement is considered to be Swiss if:
* it has been assembled in Switzerland;
* it has been inspected by the manufacturer in Switzerland; and
* the components of Swiss manufacture account for at least 50 percent of the total value, without taking into account the cost of assembly.

The Federation also goes on to say that the case, crystals, dial (face), hands, crown, strap, nor buckle need to be manufactured in Switzerland for the watch to be legally called "Swiss Made."

The information above can be found at the hellorolex.com website . This means that an inexpensive watch movement produced in the far east can be shipped to Switzerland and assembled using only one Swiss manufactured component like a screw for instance and as long as that screw cost the same amount as the rest of the movement, the movement can then be called Swiss Made. A WIS attorney who goes by the name of Luger has written a great deal about this on the web and has exposed many secrets of the Swiss watch industry.

The point is that many of the brands that read "Swiss Made" on the dial are not entirely manufactured in Switzerland and that many of the components that are good enough to be used in high dollar "Swiss Made" watches are produced in the far east and elsewhere, so the country of origin on a watch is not as important as the overall finishing and detail and the rareness of the watch.

Fashion Jewellery Buying Guide Follow Celebrity Jewellery Trends

Many jewellery trends start and gain momentum on the red carpet. Paying attention to the jewellery that adorns the celebrities can keep you in touch with the latest fashions.

Dress up with diamonds

Marilyn Monroe once sang, “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend", and many of today’s red carpet regulars will vouch for the importance of the bling-factor. Diamonds of every kind, from white diamonds, to yellow diamonds, to pink diamonds and blue diamonds, continue to dominate the Academy Awards, Grammys, Emmy awards, with everyone from Nicole Kidman to Reese Witherspoon wearing them.

Heidi Klum received a wonderful birthday gift, a huge canary yellow diamond heart, from husband Seal. He bought it to match the canary engagement ring he gave her not long ago before they were married. Tom Cruise recently surprised Katie Holmes with a single-strand diamond choker. Not long after that, she started wearing a five-carat Edwardian-style diamond engagement ring. Also expect a return in popularity of diamond initials, stemming from Madonna wearing her diamond “M” at the Live 8 concert.

Draw attention to your face

The way to draw attention to your face is to adorn yourself with earrings, necklaces, and hair ornaments. Celebrities want to put the ‘bling’ where it shows and draw attention to their faces.

Embrace bangle bracelets

Stars continue to wear bangle bracelets when they’re out and about. Kyra Sedgwick was recently seen with her right arm full of skinny gold bangle bracelets and her left with a single wide jade bangle. Lindsay Lohan also loves accessorising with lots of skinny gold bangles on her arm. Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Aniston wear wooden beads and bangles as part of the funky Boho style.

Mix and match your jewellery

Celebrities can rarely escape the attention of the media, so like their clothes, they don’t want to be seen wearing the same jewellery too often. They think up of ways to mix-up their jewellery to make it look different. For example, at the 2004 Golden Globe awards, Nicole Kidman looked fantastic wearing a golden headband, encrusted with tiny crystal gems. Another celebrity had her hairdresser put a strand of pearls in her up-do. The popular pearl belt is often just a long strand of pearls. Cate Blanchett wore pink, yellow, lavender, and green sapphire daisy brooches in her hair. Other celebrities put crystal brooches or vintage rhinestone brooches on daytime bags to turn them into purses for evening-wear.

The important thing is to have fun with your jewellery and recognise its versatility. With just one piece of jewellery and a clever idea, you can create a whole new look.

How I determine if a pocket watch case is karat gold

I have been buying and selling watches on internet anyway a long time. Over the years I have purchased great watches for low prices and junk for too much. So, several years ago I started using certain rules to determine if I wish to bid. These rules work and if you follow them you can build a great collection without getting taken.

I mostly deal in pocket watches, I buy watches needing repair, fix and sell. Lately, the price of gold has risen to levels that make pocket watches with karat gold cases an interesting investment. So, here are some of my rules for buying karat gold watches.

1. I use the symbols on the watch case to determine if the watch is karat gold. The most helpful reference that I know is "The Complete Price Guide to Watches". This book is a must have for the collector. The latest edition shows symbols for solid gold and gold fill on pages 35 to 39.

2. I prefer the case to have a stamp saying "Warranted 14K (18K) US ASSAY" all other marks need to be checked.

3. Any case marked "Guaranteed 20 years (5, 10,25)" is gold fill.

4. Any case marked "Permanent" is gold fill.

5. Any case marked with scales is gold fill.

6. Any case marked with names such as Montauk, Empress, etc. is gold fill.

Finally karat gold cases look like karat gold cases and when you strike them they make a tinging sound. Solid gold cases are generally somewhat pliable. Gold fill cases are rigid.

Introduction to the WatchLiquidators Watch Setting Instructions

There is an almost endless supply of different watches and brands of watches in the world today, with hundreds more arriving in the market place weekly.

The one thing all these tens of thousands of brands and styles have in common is the watch movement. The watch movement is the part of the watch that keeps providing the time and performs the other functions unique to the style of each different watch type.

The movements can be broken down into just a few different types of movement and then broken down into a few more subcategories. The exact placement of these functions can be different on the watch dial (face of the watch) itself. In addition, the buttons used to operate and set the time and functions may be in different places on the watchcase.

The watchcase is the part of the watch that holds the watch dial and the movement. This is also, where the band fastens. I removed the bands in the pictures and concentrated on the dials alone.

I have attempted to give pictures and category names for many of the most common different types of movements and the directions to setting them. The best somewhat generic instructions are in the Fossil category.I hope this helps you with your watch, mans most commonly used invention.

Brands
Fossil has one of the largest diversities in styles of watches among the popular brand names. This also a great category to find the operating instructions for many other brands by matching the watch dial and functions.

Nike watches are digital and unique unto themselves so I placed them in a category by themselves.

Casio, the digital leader in the world, will be added as soon as I can.

Seiko is a great brand with many diverse styles. It provides Movements to the largest number of different watch brands in the world today. These will be added as time permits.

Citizen is the other great brand and also provides Movements to a large percentage of the world’s watch brands. This is also being added to daily.

How to maintain the different kinds of watch

The watches like the clothing you wear everyday, they will direct meet your skin. If you don’t clear the watch often, it will dirty your wristbands, and will make your skin fell itching even allergy. So the watch need to be cleaned. When you take off the watch, use some soft cloth to clean the case, strap and buckle. It will let your watch works more time for you.

There are so many kinds of watch in the word, so the maintain way are various.

Automatic:

On the first week you have bought the automatic watch, maybe you don’t have enough activity on the day time, so the watch lack of the necessary power. So, we advise before you go to bed, you can move your watch flatly about one minter, it will make sure have enough power and work exactly.

The automatic watch work by the arm swing, so in order to ensure the accurate time, you will advised to wear it more about 8 hours.

Quartz:
When the batteries depletion, it makes your watches stop. You need to replacing the battery as soon as possible, otherwise the old battery can make your movement damaged.

At room temperature 5℃-35℃, the watch can work normal, the error is about ±15 seconds one month. But when the temperature is more than 50℃ or lower than -10℃, the watch will work a bit fast or slow. When back to room temperature, the situation will be better.

In order to make the watch work accuracy, do not put it close to the radio, television and so such magnetic objects.

Do not make the watch close to the solvents, mercury, make-up with aerosols, cleaners, paint thinner and camphor, or else the case and the strap will become decolorization, deterioration and damage.

When you don’t wear the automatic watches, you’d better to wind-up it once a month., so it can avoid the oil solidifies in the watch..

The waterproof, shock-proof, diamagnetic watches, only play the role of prevention, it need to avoid of water, magnetic and shock in order to avoid damage to the movement, and make it’s service life longer.

How much should a servicing of repairing a watch cost?

The amount of work that a watchmaker does for a "cleaning" can vary widely, as can the price. Higher prices don't always mean a better job, but considering the amount of skilled labor involved, I can't see how anyone charging less than $30-$40 can be doing a reasonable job and still make enough to live on. Reasonable prices seem to be in the $50-$150 range for cleaning a simple pocket or wrist watch, although I have heard of quotes ranging from $20 to $500.

For $25 or so, some watchmakers will run the entire movement through an automatic cleaning machine, and maybe throw some oil in key spots. This will often make a watch that was too dirty or is gummed up with old oil to at least "run". This lets dealers sell the watch at a much higher price because it is "running and recently serviced" rather than "not running".

For a "real" servicing, the watch needs to be completely taken a part. All parts need to be inspected for damage and wear. Any broken, worn or missing parts need to be fixed. The parts need to be cleaned, usually with an automatic cleaning machine, and then inspected to make sure the parts really got clean. The watch must be reassembled, and checked to make sure it is running well in all positions. If the watch isn't running well in all positions, the problems must be diagnosed, fixed, and possibly the watch will need to be re-cleaned and re-oiled. Finally, most watchmakers let the watch run for at least 24-48 hours to make sure everything is working right.

Some watchmakers also use "automatic cleaning and oiling solutions" which deposits an oily goo all over the watch and eats away the finish. A "real" cleaning requires hand oiling, in the right amounts and in the right spots. Too much oil can be worse than not enough.

There are some watchmakers who will charge more to people who contact them directly than they do when they work for a jeweler. This is especially common if they think you have only one watch that is a family heirloom and this is their only chance to get money from you. These watchmakers may well be willing to negotiate on their price. Others watchmakers charge everyone the same price and won't be flexible at all. They may even be slightly put off if you ask.

Complicated watches such as chronographs, repeaters, fusee, and such will cost more, as will brands that have hard to find or expensive parts such has the high end Swiss watches. Watches from Switzerland, England or other non-American watches made before around 1910 can be very hard to find parts for, often the parts have to be custom made by hand.

Remember, the price quoted as $50-$150 is for just a cleaning, you should expect that any other work your watch requires will cost more accordingly. Old watches were put away in a drawer for a reason, often because they were broken or unreliable.

Most watchmakers won't try to make a watch run more accurately than when they were originally manufactured, so when I say "check the timing in each position", on an unadjusted 7 jewel movement, they probably will just make sure that it is keeping time within 10-60 seconds/day. A high grade railroad watch, on the other hand, will probably be made to run to within 10 seconds/day in every position, with the goal of having some positions cancel the errors of the others. Railroad watches were designed to keep time, while in rough use, to 30 seconds/week and most can be made that accurate even today.

The point here is that a quote of "$25" to repair a watch probably isn't a bargain, but $150 (or more) may be very reasonable for a given watch. On the other hand, the $150 quote might be no better than $25.

Caring for your watch strap

These tips will keep your watch strap looking new for longer:

Don’t wear perfume or moisturizers around your wrist, as the chemicals will erode the metal, leather and plastic of watchstraps.

Avoid leaving the watch in direct sunlight, as this fades leather and plastic straps.Metal bracelets should be washed carefully in water. If your bracelet is really dirty, use a soft toothbrush with soap and water. Finally, rinse with water and dry carefully with a soft cloth. If your watch is not water resistant, be careful not to get water on the case. Cases should be wiped gently with a slightly moistened soft cloth and then carefully dried.

Leather straps should be slightly loosened in the summer, when they may absorb perspiration. A tight strap not only prevents the passage of air over the strap undersurface but can also cause a perspiration rash on the wrist.

If the strap ever becomes wet with perspiration, wipe it dry with a soft cloth. When you take off your watch, leave it in a well-ventilated spot. Never put it in a sealed container if it is damp with perspiration.

Special care for watches:

Shocks: Your watch is a precision instrument. Treat it carefully, and it will serve you well. Avoid undue shocks (such as dropping on hard surfaces). Normal shocks caused by sports like tennis or golf are no problem, although "Twin Seiko" (extra-high precision) watches should not be worn while participating in such sports.

Perspiration: Protect your watch from heavy perspiration. Remember to wipe it dry as soon as conveniently possible.

Extreme temperatures: Quartz watches are much less affected by temperature than mechanical watches, and are designed to keep good time if worn on the wrist for eight hours a day in temperatures between -10°C and +35°C. If removed completely from the wrist, your watch may lose time during the winter, but will return to normal accuracy as soon as you start wearing it again.

If your watch is stored at temperatures outside the normal range (as low as -10°C or as high as +60°C) the electronic components may not function normally.

At temperatures below freezing, the liquid crystals in digital watch displays respond slowly. They also tend to look very dark at high temperatures. Normal performance returns at normal temperatures.

Your battery may run out much more quickly at high temperatures (above 40°C), and battery fluid may even leak out.

Chemicals: Chemical substances, gases, and so on, can discoluor cases, bracelets and straps. Mercury (from a broken thermometer, for instance) can cause particularly unsightly grey discoloration of gold plating.

How often should I get my watch serviced?

If you are going to use the vintage watch on a daily basis, you should get your watch serviced when you first get it and every couple of years there after. Water resistant watches can usually go 3-5 years, but if want to count on it being water resistant, you should have the seals checked every year. You shouldn't wait for your watch to stop working before servicing it any more than you would wait for your car to stop working before changing its oil.

If you aren't going to use the vintage watch, you should have it inspected to make sure that what you got was what you thought you were going to get. There are pros and cons involved with having a watch in your collection cleaned. Every time a watch is worked on, there is a certain risk that something will be broken or lost. Many cleanings will also dull the finish on the parts, and this is especially true for damaskeened and two-tone finishes. Cleaning will often also clean off some of the paint in the lettering on the movement. And, of course, there is the added expense of having a watch cleaned.

On the other hand, a cleaned and oiled watch is less likely to rust or have corrosion from gunk on the metal. They aren't making any new replacement parts for antique watches, so If your watch needs parts now, you are more likely to get it fixed now than in the future.

You should also immediately get your watch cleaned if the insides (movement) ever gets wet, or even if you just see moisture forming on the inside of the crystal. Don't trust the "water proofing" on vintage wrist watches, treat them like pocket watches and non-water resistant wrist watches. Water resistant watches can actually be worse because the gaskets and seals wear out and end up trapping water inside instead of keeping it out.

Most vintage watches can be fixed, but rust is the #1 killer of watches.

Watches need to be cleaned whenever the oil has broken down or when there is too much dust and dirt on the gears. It used to be said that watches should be cleaned every year, but the quality of the oil has improved and most people don't live in as dirty an environment as they did when people used horses to get around town and heated their homes with coal.

Dust will act as an abrasive and grinds away the metal. This increases friction, both by making the surfaces rough and also by changing the shape and position of the gears. The gears are designed so that the teeth roll on each other, instead of sliding. Once the right shape is worn away, they will never be as good. In general, the older the watch, the poorer the job the case will do in keeping the dust out. Water resistant watches, even when the seals no longer keep out water, tend to do a good job of keeping out dust.

Gucci Profit Seen Down, Focus on Core

The world's third biggest luxury goods group Gucci is due to suffer more erosion in full-year profits next week, hit by a soft economy and war fears, but investors hope for an upturn in the core business, analysts said.

Results will also be poured over for details about loss-making Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) after Gucci delayed the break-even target last month for its French design house.

Investors have been braced for weak figures after Gucci, also home to British designer Alexander McQueen, issued a profit warning in December due to a downturn in sales ahead of the key Christmas season.

On Thursday, the sector was hit with more gloom when Swiss Richemont (RIFZ.VX), number two in the sector after market leader LVMH (Paris:LVMH.PA - News), warned of a likely drop of up to 40 percent in full-year operating profit.

Luxury firms have been suffering from global economic weakness and uncertainty ahead of the war in Iraq, expected to cause high-spending tourists to curtail travel plans.

Diluted earnings per share are due to slide 33 percent to 2.08 euros when figures for Gucci's fiscal year ending January 31 are released on Thursday, a Reuters survey of eight analysts shows.

CORE DIVISION

Sales in the Gucci division, famed for handcrafted handbags and loafers, are expected to fall by 9.4 percent, much worse than the one percent loss seen in group sales.

Analysts say the division, which accounts for two-thirds of group turnover, has lost sales to rivals such as LVMH's Louis Vuitton, but were hopeful the fourth quarter had shown an improvement.

"We think they were trying to go too upmarket in their leather goods. It is something that they supposedly addressed so we would expect an improvement to be reflected in their trading statement," an analyst in London said.

Another analyst, however, said the Gucci division's weakness was due to its placement within the sector.

"I find it unsurprising that it has underperformed -- the number one brands in a segment in difficult times will always beat the number two and number three brands. The stronger your brand, the better you do in difficult times."

Watches Buying Guide-Determine What Type of Watch You Want

Whether you require a wristwatch or pocket watch, you'll firstly have to decide if you want a battery-powered quartz watch or a mechanical watch that requires winding.

Choose your quartz watch

Quartz watches are the most common type of watches, offering both stability and accuracy. A small piece of quartz oscillates at over 32,000 vibrations per second. This ensures accurate timekeeping and explains why quartz watches only lose around 10 seconds of time each month. In addition, quartz watches do not require winding and you'll only need to replace the battery once every couple of years. Quartz watch faces come in various styles including analogue, digital, and anidigi.
· Analogue quartz watches: Analogue watch faces have either numbers, Roman numerals, or tick marks to indicate time intervals.
· Digital quartz watches: Digital watch faces provide an exact readout of the time in hours and minutes. Often, digital watches will have extra features such as depth sensors, Global Positioning System (GPS), altimeters, phone books, calculators, and compasses.
· Anidigi quartz watches: Anidigi watch faces include a combination of the numeric elements of an analogue watch face as well as a digital display of the time.

Get ready to wind mechanical watches

Mechanical watches boast traditional craftsmanship and will usually be a little more expensive than quartz watches due to the skill and cost of labour required to build a valuable and complex timepiece. They depend on a spring (the "mainspring") to provide energy to an oscillator (often a wheel called a "balance wheel") as it unwinds. Because the wheel oscillates at around 28,000 vibrations each hour, your watch can lose several minutes in any given month. You'll find two types of mechanical watches:
· Automatic mechanical watches: Automatic mechanical watches use a rotor swing that responds to motion, winding the mainspring running the watch. Often, automatic mechanical watches come with a transparent or partially-transparent display so you can see the rotor in action. If you wear an automatic mechanical watch for more than 12 hours each day, your motion will keep the watch mechanism running. However, you'll need to wind your watch if you don't wear it for a few days.
· Manual mechanical watches: Manual mechanical watches, also called wind watches, require daily winding to tighten the spring.
